Last week the Fandads were invited to the U.S Premiere of Transformers: The Last Knight. The premiere was held at the Civic Opera House in downtown Chicago and had everything you could ask for in a premiere: a red carpet, inflatable Transformers and celebrities. This was the first time that the Fandads have ever been invited to a premiere of a movie and it was a pretty memorable experience.
Now the Fandads have never been to something this big so we dressed our best in case we were going to meet celebrities and maybe walk near the red carpet. This was a strange setting for a premiere. The red carpet was on a barge on the river and it was hard for fans to see the celebrities as they walked on it. While there was big screens outside and inside the theater for fans to see the ongoing events, it felt a little distant for the average fan to really enjoy it.
Once we got inside the theater there was a little dilemma with our seats and the staff at the theater was so very nice that they were able to find us four seats together so we would not be sitting separately in the theater. The movie did not start until a little after 8:30 and I was just a little worried that my children would not stay awake the entire time. By the time the movie started we were all settled in and awaiting the 5th installment of the Transformers series.
The Opera House was fitted with an IMAX screen for this showing with accompanying sound system and a small stage at the front for the actors to make an appearance. I'll admit that I was getting a little restless before the movie started along with my children. So by the time it started I was glad.
My review about the movie will be pretty short. It's a Transformers movie. There are a lot of cool action sequences. There are a lot of "did that really happen?" moments and the story comes at you so fast that you just have to suspend disbelief. There is one scene when John Turturro's character is speaking to Anthony Hopkins on the phone and they are talking so fast that it is hard to keep up with what they are saying.
I understand that it is a movie about robots from space and it is supposed to be fun and all, but it was a little too long for me. This latest Transfomers movie clocks in at over two and a half hours and it feels that some of the storylines could have been left for another movie. There is this subplot with a young girl named Izzy and Mark Wahlberg's character Cade that goes nowhere and it feels a little forced. During a climatic fight (this isn't a spoiler since it is shown in the trailer) of Bumblebee and Optimus Prime fighting that ends in a Batman V Superman way, that just had me shaking my head.
The end of the film leaves it open for more Transformers movies to be made and there was another subplot that I completely forgot about until the mysterious female mentioned "Unicron" again.
If you are a fan of the Transformers' series you will or probably have seen this movie by now. It's a fun movie if you like to see robots fighting, but it is just too long of a movie to see robots fighting.
