Taking on Thor: Ragnarok with the Revengers! Movie Review

Disclaimer: The Fandads were invited to an advance screening of Thor:Ragnarok. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

You have probably heard by now that Thor:Ragnarok is one of the best reviewed Marvel movies to date and we are here to tell you that the Fandads agree. This has got to be one of the funniest movies in the Marvel Universe along with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

If you have not heard of Taika Waititi yet, you should check out some of his earlier movies. I recommend: What We do in the Shadows and Eagle vs. Shark. These movies are quirky and funny and have a certain feel to them that just makes you want to watch more. The same can be said about Thor: Ragnarok. The movie is just so full of color and humor that you do not want it to end and when it does end you want more.

Korg is one of the break-out stars of the movie and voiced by Taika Waititi. Is that Baymax on the right?
Since we like making our reviews short and sweet, we will say a few things about the movie. The movie starts in midias res with Thor is a cage telling someone how he ended up in the situation that he is in. Right from the start the jokes come in and it is fun to see Thor in this manner. It pretty much sets the pace as to how humorous the movie is going to be.

When the action does start in the intro scene Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" burst through the speakers and just amps up the level of the action. Just like James Gunn used Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" Twice in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Waititi uses "Immigrant Song" twice and both times they work perfect in the movie.

The movie feels like a throwback to old-school 70's sci-fi films. The brilliant use of colors, the strange assortment of characters and even the music that plays throughout the film feels like something you would have watched on a Saturday morning matinee. The score is done by Mark Mothersbaugh and it is mesmerizing. You can kind of say that this movie feels like a mixture of Flash Gordon and Battle Beyond the Stars because of the sights and the music.

The Revengers?
The cast in the movie is great. Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth have great chemistry together along with Tom Hiddleston's Loki. The banter between Thor and Loki is hilarious because you get an insight as to how their childhood must have been, but there are also touching moments between the two.

Tessa Thompson's Valkrie is a fantastic addition to this cast as her character is a tough warrior that takes no mess from anyone. It seems like the only person she gets along with is Hulk, who is himself fantastic in the movie. The break-out star of this movie is Korg who is voiced by the director himself. I would like Marvel to add a one-shot short of Korg on their next blu-ray release. I could watch Korg all day and I don't think I am the only person who thinks this way.

All I am going to say about Cate Blanchett's Hela is that she is a bad-ass and I would have liked to see more scenes of her fighting.

Thor: Ragnarok is a fun movie and an amazing departure from the previous Thor movies. As much as I liked the serious Thor, this version of him is fun and refreshing. There are a few cameos in the movie that I do not want to spoil, not only other Marvel characters, but actors that are not shown in any of the advertisements for the film. You will see Stan Lee making his usual cameo, but his scene is pretty funny.

Kid Friendly: If your child has seen any of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, then they are going to be ok with this film. There are not that many curse words like GOTG, but there are a few slow scenes that might bore them.

Violence: Again, if they have seen any Marvel movie they will see about the same amount of violence here. One moment in the final fight with Hela might draw a gasp from your child and the audience, but it is nothing too gory.

Fandads Rating: 5 out of 5. This move is a great ride and a lot of fun for the family.
