We adopted a Pelican! #StormBoy

It seems like every year we get a movie involving a child helping out some type of animal or a movie about a dog or cat going on an adventure. Now while these movies may be cheesy to some people, these movies are what some of us need to see with our family in between all of the big action blockbusters. Storm Boy is one of those feel-good movies that involves a young boy helping out three pelicans and shows the friendship that they form. 

The movie Storm Boy does start a little slow but really starts to pick up with Michael Kingley, played by Geoffrey Rush, starts telling the tale of Storm Boy to his granddaughter. He tells her about how he lived with his father and finding three pelican chicks. Telling his story to his granddaughter makes Michael rethink a big decision that he was going to make with his company and changes the course of their lives. 

This is a fun movie for anyone who has ever had a pet and knows the bond that can be created between a human and an animal. While raising pelicans seems like a strange pet to have, the relationship between the two is identical. Watching this with my children helped them to understand that every animal is special and we should do anything we can to help all animals. 

As a way to help promote Storm Boy, the Fandads adopted a pelican through the World Animal Foundation. The adoption certificate came in my children's names and we received a folder with a lot of information about pelicans and the type of pelican that we adopted. We also received a picture of our pelican and a form to name it. While my children have been trying to find the perfect name for our pelican, I would like to name it after a Star Wars character, but we will see what name we can come up with. 

One of the cool things that we also received due to adopting the pelican was our own pelican plush. This will be a cool reminder for my children to know that somewhere out there we have a pelican that we are helping. I doubt that the pelican will ever write us a letter telling us how they are doing, but it would be pretty cool. We also received an activity packet, which includes coloring sheets, word finds, and an origami lesson to make our own paper pelican.

When Kingley starts to see images from his past that he can't explain, he is forced to remember his long-forgotten childhood, growing up on an isolated coastline with his father (Jai Courtney). He recounts to his granddaughter the story of how, as a boy (Finn Little), he rescued and raised an extraordinary orphaned pelican, Mr.Percival. Their remarkable adventures and very special bond has a profound effect on all their lives. Based on the beloved book, Storm Boy is a timeless story of an unusual and unconditional friendship.
