As a dad, getting time to play video games is kind of difficult sometimes. In my house, we only have one television, so after we catch up on shows and the children go to bed I have the television to myself. Here is where the conundrum begins: Do I try to binge watch a few episodes of that one series I started? Or do I see what game I can play for a few hours before I fall asleep on the couch? What's a dad to do?
Like I mentioned before when I do get to play video games, I aim to play something that I can knock out in a few hours. Be it a game or two of football or a few levels on a platform shooter, I tend to play something that I do not have to remember where I was at last time or how far I was in my journey. RPGs (Role Playing games) are not really my thing at this stage of my life. When I was younger I spent hours on ChronoTrigger and Final Fantasy 7, but I had all of the free time in the world. So when I was given the opportunity to review Beast Quest by Maximum Games, I decided to give RPGs another try.
For those of you unfamiliar Beast Quest is based on Adam Blade’s bestselling book series in the UK. It is a succession of children’s fantasy and adventure novels. Think Lord of the Rings mixed with a little Dungeons and Dragons. The series is a big hit and you can purchase them on Amazon (not an affiliate). We were given a book to giveaway, which we'll talk about later, but glancing at the story it was a lot of fun and something that any boy or girl can get into. I mean, what kid does not like action and adventure books...maybe a few.
The game follows the adventure of Tom. Yeah, I know the name does not stand out like in most video games, but I think that is a great thing. Having a regular name makes the character more relatable and one that is believable. The game starts off with Tom being chosen to go on a quest to save the kingdom of Avantia. Tom starts off with basic weapons and as he moves on in his quest he levels up and meets new allies.
The gameplay in the game is pretty simple and easy to get a grasp on as you play along. I think this is a great thing for kids to play because you do not want to make the controls too difficult. There is text in the game, but it is at a reading level that should not be hard for your children to read. The tutorials are also pretty easy to follow along with. Again, this game was made with children in mind so it is not that hard to get into.
While playing I noticed the same thing that I noticed in other RPGs I've played in the past: the fighting aspect of the game gets to be repetitious. This can be a good and bad thing in a game for children. If it becomes too repetitious, children might get bored and not want to play anymore, but if they like the repetition it will help them improve their fighting skills. I am in the latter group. I do not mind fighting the enemies to level up my character, but there are times where I wish I could just skip the fighting and move along.
Some of the key features in the game include:
- A Sprawling, Epic Journey. Explore spectacular environments on your quest to release the Beasts that are under the dark magic of the wizard, Malvel.
- Action-Packed Combat. Battle dangerous creatures and take on giant Beasts in boss battles, using swift maneuvers to dodge, block and attack enemies.
- Profound Upgrades. Upgrade health, attack and defense through your skill tree, and equip accessories to augment your hero’s attributes.
- A Land of Treasure. Explore snowy peaks and spooky forests, seeking out ancient artifacts and lost fortune.
- Hundreds of Challenges. Embark on numerous side missions along your journey that reveal the many hidden secrets of Avantia.
In the few hours I played the game I had to do a few side quest that are not like your normal side quest in RPGs. I had to find the cookies that were stolen from the local baker. I had to find flowers for a woman in the village and then fight off some enemies to get swords to make sword cookies. These were pretty fun and easy to do, but I also liked that the menu had the quest listed so I can remember what I was working on. I was able to get pretty far in my few hours playing the game and I am invested to see what happens to Tom and the land of Avantia.
