Skylanders Season 2 is Here!

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided early access to the second season of Skylanders Academy for this review. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Photos provided by Netflix

On October 6th the second season of Skylanders Academy started streaming on Netflix and the Fandads were given the opportunity to watch the first three episodes before the official launch date. I never knew there was a show based on the video game phenomenon, I just knew of the video games and all the characters for the games.

Luckily, my daughter never got into these games. I know that if she did my wallet would hate me. I mean have you seen the number of Skylander figures that are available for these games? It seems like every time we pass by that section the number of figures has multiplied. Are there that many figures in the actual cartoon? The answer to that question is easy: no.

Is that a real head on a snowman?" In a few days I will get the answers to my question when the movie comes out. In the meantime are you ready for The Snowman? Let's find out!

Viewing Vacation Pictures on my Television with the Amazon Fire TV #sponsored

Disclosure: The Fandads were provided with an Amazon Fire TV Stick for this post. Thanks to Amazon for sponsoring this post. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

When I was younger, I would remember friends wanting to show me pictures of what they did on their summer vacations. I remember it being either an exciting thing or a tedious thing. Depending on where they went it was fun to look at their pictures, but imagine 4 or 5 people huddled around a photo album looking at printed pictures of different sizes. Come to think of it now, it wasn't that much fun to do.

Why my favorite part of Captain Underpants came after the movie finished

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided with a copy of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie for review. All thoughts, opinions and laughs are our own.

Back in the days when I used to work at Waldenbooks, getting the newest Captain Underpants book was a big deal. I remember children coming into the store with their parents excited to get the books and I would smile at the insanely hilarious titles of each book. Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets. Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wedgie Woman. Captain Underpants and Revolting Revenge of the Robo-Boxers. I think I was just as excited as these children when a book came out, but for me it was more about seeing the titles of these fun books.

Recently Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie was released on Blu-ray and my children and I could not wait to see it again. We were lucky enough to be invited to an advance screening of the movie and I think I was more excited than my children. My daughter has never read the books so she was not that interested in seeing the movie. I remember pointing the books out to her whenever we would go to a bookstore and she would just shrug. She wasn't interested in seeing a man run around in his underpants. I can tell you that that all changed after we saw the movie and now my daughter wants to read all of the Captain Underpants books.

If you are not familiar with the Captain Underpants books it is about two boys, George and Harold, who are the best of friends. The two are always causing mischief in school and together they make a comic book titled: Captain Underpants. The boys finally get caught one day and with the help of a hypnotizing ring they hypnotize their principal, Mr. Krupp, into believing that he is Captain Underpants.

The movie basically follows the first book and the third book in the series. The movie gives us the origin story of Captain Underpants and show us the deep friendship between George and Harold. This friendship is fantastic to see on the big screen. There are not that many movies that I can think of recently that shows the great friendship and love two boys can have for each other. Their friendship reminds me of friends that I had when I was younger. Friends that were inseparable and we would play from sun up until sun down. Harold and George brought me back to my childhood and that is one reason that I loved this movie.

The other reason I loved this movie came when the movie finished. No, I was not happy that it was over, it was one of the songs that played at the end that made the room a little dusty for me. I remember my friend Scotty from Dads Who Change Diapers mentioned it in a post about how the song "A Friend like You" by Andy Grammer struck a cord with him. I don't remember hearing the song at the screening we went to. I think we were rushing out to avoid a tantrum and probably just walked out as the credits started rolling.

When watching the movie at home with my children we watched it all the way to the end and when this song came on, I lost it a little. The great thing about Captain Underpants is not Captain Underpants, it is the friendship between George and Harold. These two boys have a friendship that I think most males had when they were younger. We all had that friend that we would hang out with 24/7 and never get tired of just being around them. It is refreshing to see a friendship like this in a movie where so many young eyes will be watching it.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is a fun movie for the kids, but it also packs a lot of emotion and tells a great story about friendship.

The Lego Ninjago Movie Review

Disclaimer: The Fandads were invited to a screening of the LEGO Ninjago Movie, all thoughts, opinions and laughing are our own.

Imagine if your father was an evil villain who was always trying to capture the city that you lived in. Now imagine that everyone knew that he was your father. Yeah, going to school would be a bit of a bummer with everyone scared of you and the high school cheer team creates a cheer especially for you. School wouldn't be the best place to be, but at least you have your small group of friends to cheer you up and help fight off your evil dad because you are ninjas.

Keeping the environment safe during SepticSmart Week

As a dad, there was one moment in both of my children’s lives that I was dreading and that was potty training. I mean, the concept of it sounds easy: take your child to the bathroom and have them sit on the toilet and viola, potty training is done. But is that ever really the case?

Thoughts from the Son of Immigrants

The picture above is from a tree at the neighborhood park that was blown down during a windy rainstorm that hit the city not too long ago. As you can see, the tree was uprooted and the branches were broken as the once mighty tree now laid on its side waiting for the city to come and chop it up. So what does this tree have to do with anything parenting related? Let me tell you.

Disclaimer: The Fandads were given a pass to attend Wizard World Comic-Con. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Wizard World Comic-Con 2017 came and went and the Fandads were there on Sunday to take in as much as we could. Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Review

When Star Wars Rebels first started I was excited about a new Star Wars show that would not only give us new characters, but it would also be considered cannon for the movies that came before and after it. I remember watching it and immediately loving the fact that there were two strong female characters in the show and those two: Hera and Sabine instantly became my daughter's favorite characters.

Learn about the Science of Speed with Acceleration Nation by NASCAR

Disclaimer: The Fandads were compensated for this post to talk about the new NASCAR Acceleration Nation App. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Since watching the Cars movies with my children they know a little about NASCAR and motorsports, but they never really learned much about the science of racing. What does a blue flag with a diagonal yellow stripe mean? What is the difference between "downforce" and "drag"?

If you have your children asking you questions like this then you need to download the new Acceleration Nation app by NASCAR. The website and app, which is available on Android and iPhone, features fun games, info on races, details on cars, and learning materials about the science of racing!

Get Ready to have fun with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 #GOTGVol2

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided with a copy of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for review. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

I remember when I first heard that they were making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie I thought it was not going to do well. A talking tree and raccoon is not going to be an easy take for those that are not familiar with the comic and boy am I glad I was wrong. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of my favorite series of movies from Marvel Studios and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has picked up where the last one left off. The movie was just released on Blu-ray this past week and it is a blast to watch at home.

Luke Y. Thompson, formerly of Nerdist, Topless Robot, Deadline, and OC Weekly, has joined Wizard World as Associate Editor.

WizPop the daily video news service will share the uniquely authoratiative point-of-view of Wizard covering the larger universe of all things pop-culture.

In addition to standing as a daily digital presence, plans are in the works to return to publishing Wizard as a premium quarterly magazine.

From “Casting Calls” to “The Drawing Board,” classic Wizard Magazine columns will be revived as web-based articles and regular video features. Wizard and WizPop will feature news and reviews of the latest in comics, tech, movies, gaming, TV, music, and toys. Moving forward one word at a time

Every week it is the same routine with my son and my wife. I pack my backpack with my laptop and he hands me his water bottle to hold on one of the side pockets designed to hold water bottles. We get in the car and make the 15-20 minute drive to the children pediatric center for his appointment. We walk into the office and check in at the front desk and take a seat until it is his turn.

Getting our fill of steak at Culinary Fight Club

Disclaimer: The Fandads were invited to cover Culinary Fight Club all thoughts and opinions are our own.

My wife and I have always talked about trying out as many restaurants as possible. It is kind of a goal of ours to enjoy a nice exotic meal and just really sit there and savor the entire experience. Obviously, since we have children, sometimes it is hard to go to a nice restaurant and just take our time eating. One day we will have that luxury, but in the meantime, we have fun events like the Culinary Fight Club to give us that experience.

Man vs Child: One Dad's Guide to the Weirdness of Parenting Book Review

I remember the time before my children were born I would read a lot. I would grab a book and spend a few hours sitting down just reading. I loved going on journeys to different worlds and just enjoying the pleasure of reading. Sometimes, I would finish a book in a day or two because I had the time to do it, then my children were born.

There is no limit on what the geeky things can be. We share with our children our love for comic books, handheld games and even music. We never force anything onto them: if they like it, they like it, if not, no big deal.

Disclaimer - The Fandads have teamed up with Russell Athletic and were compensated for this post. All thoughts, opinions and tired feet are our own.

A few months ago I teamed up with Russell Athletic to write about their Cool Force Performance underwear and talked about how they kept my "boys" cool when I was being the sporty Dadlete that I am. Now Russell Athletic has released their new FreshForce™ Performance underwear and what better way for this dadlete to try these out than by running a half marathon with them on? So how did this turn out? Keep reading to see what happened.

Splatoon 2 is here!

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided with a downloadable copy of Splatoon 2 for this review. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

What's up everyone! We're back with another review, just in the nick of time. The Switch is an amazing console but some people have been complaining about the lack of "must buy" titles. Well, I'm glad to say that Splatoon 2 might just fit the bill for a "must buy".

I didn't play the first Splatoon very much, but I didn't find that to be a barrier in order to enjoy the sequel. That being said, the Splatoon series seems to have carved itself a nice little niche and has a huge following. It's also had an appeal to those of us who enjoy FPS type games but aren't ready to let our kids mow down people in a violent setting. Splatoon's weapons use paint, which is far friendly than packing lead, well unless it's lead paint...but I digress.

You have shooters or blasters, rollers, chargers, sloshers (buckets), splatings, dualies, and brellas (you guessed it, umbrella weapons). There's also gear to check out that can give you abilities/upgrades, such as Swim Speed Up. You can also get additional slots on your gear for secondary abilities, I could keep going, but to sum it up, there's a lot you can do in the game.

I mentioned earlier that I didn't spend a lot of time with the original Splatoon, but if I remember correctly there wasn't much a single player story or campaign mode. Fortunately Splatoon 2 has got me covered in regards to playing solo. There's a whole story involving a kidnapping which I won't give away, and it seems like it's a decent length. I've been playing for a while and I still haven't finished it, so it's nice to know that the story mode isn't just an add-on or afterthought.

Now, the game isn't perfect by any means. As usual Nintendo drops the ball in the online department. This is the type of game where online communication would really be helpful. As luck would have it, the Nintendo Switch Online App just went live (available on the Google Play store for Android and the App Store for iPhone) and I'm hoping that changes things up. I'm going to try to check that out, so this will remain a "review in progress" but so far, so good. Even before I check that out though, I have to say that this is a great game to pick to play with the kids and with your friends. If you're on the fence and into shooters definitely give Splatoon 2 a shot!

Splatoon 2 is rated E10+, meaning that it's suitable for everyone 10 and over, but I honestly didn't see anything too objectionable for kids as young as 5. It's out now!

Pushing myself to the Limit (Sporty Dad 109)

In mid-June I did something that I did not think I would ever do: I ran the Spartan Super and Spartan Sprint on the same weekend. Completing these two races is a big deal for me because there was a few times during the Super that I just wanted to stop and not do it anymore, but I had a goal for myself and that was to finish no matter what. Not only was finishing these races important to me, but I felt I had to prove something to myself.

Hey friends, here we are again with our "What to Do" posts and this week we have a fun events that will take place early next week and next weekend. We're telling you about the next weekend one now so you can start planning your trip. Ok, so are we ready? Let's go!

Hanging out with the Pitmasters at the Culinary Fight Club

Disclamer - The Fandads were invited to cover the Culinary Fight Club in exchange for tickets to the event. All thoughts, opinions and full stomachs are our own.

I am not really a foodie. I mean, I am not the type that can tell what spices and seasonings were used in a dish just by tasting it, but I love to eat food. Back in the day when I was home with my daughter I would sit and watch the Food Network all day and attempt to try out some of the dishes I would see. Sometimes the dishes were a success while other times they came out so-so.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Review #SpiderManHomecoming #Updated

Within the first, say 15 to 20 minutes, of Spider-Man: Homecoming, I knew that Sony has finally given us the Spider-Man movie that we have been waiting for. The movie had everything that you would expect from reading an issue of Spider-Man: humor, tough decisions, action, and a lot of heart. Now, full disclosure, I am a huge Spider-Man fan and going into this movie I was a bit worried, but I walked out of the theater with a big smile on my face and it stayed until the next day.

Despicable Me 3 Review and Giveaway

Disclaimer: The Fandads teamed up with Fandango for this giveaway. All thoughts and opinions are our own and no, a minion does not have a fart gun to our heads so we say good things about the movie.

When you see Gru and the Minions on the big screen you know that you will be in for a good and silly time. In this third movie of the series we not only get the silliness that we are used to with the minions, but we also get a little bit of heart in the story between Gru and his brother Dru. Don't worry, it's not as sappy as it sounds.

Transformers: The Last Knight Premiere and Review

Last week the Fandads were invited to the U.S Premiere of Transformers: The Last Knight. The premiere was held at the Civic Opera House in downtown Chicago and had everything you could ask for in a premiere: a red carpet, inflatable Transformers and celebrities. This was the first time that the Fandads have ever been invited to a premiere of a movie and it was a pretty memorable experience.

T-shirt Thursday!

I am NOT having a good day with technology. Camera doesn't work, phone won't upload pics, Air Book won't charge...ugh. About the only thing that's gone right today is that both Loot Crate and MCC boxes showed up today!

More Than Meets the Eye!
This beauty showed up today in our Loot Crate. Very timely as Transformers: The Last Knight is in theaters now! (Funny how that works) The Marvel Collector Corps box also had a nice shirt, but we'll feature that one next week!

Thanks for reading!

The Adventure Continues, #ThanksBaby

Disclosure: The Fandads have partnered with Life of Dad  and Pampers for this promotion.

Remember those mornings when you would just wake up and not want to get out of bed? There have been many times in my past that I would wish that the days would just fly by. A lot of the times I would not want to get out of bed, but I knew that I had classes to attend and a job to go to, so I did it. I would go through those monotonous days and just feel like this is what my life was going to be. To quote Aesop Rock "Wake, Work, Sleep" and that is not what I wanted for my life.

Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray review

Disclaimer: The Fandads received a copy of Beauty and the Beast for this review. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

With the home release of Disney's Beauty and the Beast fans of the animated movie can relieve all of their favorite scenes from the comfort of their own home. The Blu-ray has all the bells and whistles like most home releases:commentaries, behind the scene featurettes but the one bonus is the inclusion of the sing-a-long version on the disc.

It's that time of year again. That time where you start seeing the "Dads and Grads" (why are these two always combined?) signs everywhere and you start wondering what tie you should get your father this year.  Well, if you are in that particular dilemma right now, put down that tie and check out our list of things that dads would like for Father's Day.

ARMS Review

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided with a downloadable copy of ARMS for this review. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

ARMS has been in heavy rotation around the Fandads.com studio for the past couple of weeks. When I found out we were going to have early access to the game it was an awesome and unexpected surprise. Our access came along the same time that the Global Testpunch was happening and it gave me a good chance to try out the game with a lot of other people.

There are a variety of modes to check out online!
My first impressions were that it was a unique game. It's kind of hard to describe and/or compare to anything else. Yes, it's a fighting game, but it's also something else. Grappling? Wrestling? Not quite, but there are elements somewhere in there.

The learning curve seemed to be tough, especially in "thumbs up" mode, which I assume is the way the game is meant to be played. (Thumbs up mode is basically having one Joy-Con in each hand and controlling your fighter by moving your hands and punching to attack.) I got my rear handed to me pretty easily and frequently, even on lower difficulty settings. Master Mummy is the only character I've actually gotten to be somewhat proficient with. Seeing as how I was having some difficulty with the game, I thought I'd give the next generation a try.

I let my girls play for a while, with an extra pair of Joy-Cons they were both able to experience the game in "thumbs up" mode, and they had wildly different experiences. One of my girls was frustrated and couldn't get the game to do what she wanted it to. Unfortunately she ended up being upset and quickly gave up on the game. Daughter #2 though, couldn't get enough. She was sticking and moving like a pro and quickly decimated her sister. She then moved on to me and it wasn't pretty. I can 100% assure you that I wasn't trying to let her win and she mopped the floor with me.

Although it was fun for her, I believe that this is one of the issues I have with the game. My five year daughter was able to beat me to a pulp by essentially button-mashing with the right character. Again, it might be me and my lack of experience with the game, but it didn't interest me enough to want to keep playing it so I could actually get better.

The Hoops, V-Ball, and Skill Shot modes offer some depth to the game, I actually found those modes more enjoyable than the fighting, but the "story" mode, or Grand Prix, didn't hold my attention. The characters aren't very interesting either. Yes, they look cool, and ARMS is definitely different, but it still wasn't wowing me.

Determined to give it more of a chance, I let my "focus group" AKA students at school, try it out. Well,  it turns out maybe this game isn't for me. The kids loved it. the characters, the colors, they really got into it. They also didn't seem to be having too many problems learning the controls. I'm sure part of it was because kids are so quick to pick up games these days, but it also could have been that they were playing "traditionally" with the Joy-Cons. I didn't want any kids accidentally punching themselves so I had them play with one Joy-Con each and it seemed to work out well. I actually started playing this way and with the controls attached to the Switch and the game seems to be a bit more bearable this way. I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

So my final verdict is that Dads could probably give this one a pass, if you're into fighting games there are definitely better options out there. That being said, this might be a good pick up for the kids. There isn't any blood and the characters are pretty abstract. It's rated E 10+, so it's good for anyone 10 and up but my kids, both under 10, seemed to be fine with it.

Until next time, thanks for reading.
