What Happened to Sporty Dad?

It’s been a while since I have posted anything about being a sporty dad, but that does not mean I have been living the sporty dad life…(that sounds weird). Since my last Sporty Dad post, I have run a few races, did a Spartan race, and I did not run the Chicago marathon. That is the one race I was sad I did not run, but maybe I'll do it again in the future. So here is what went down last year.

A&A Ballet Presents Sleeping Beauty

Disclaimer: The Fandads were invited to A&A Ballet's Presentation of Sleeping Beauty. All thoughts, opinions, and wonderment are our own.

Attending a ballet performance is not something that we do that often in our family. When my daughter was younger she took ballet classes and we attended two recitals in her short ballet career. Even though she still continues taking dance classes that are not ballet, she still likes watching ballet performances. When we were invited to see the new A&A Ballet presentation of Sleeping Beauty, my daughter was excited to go.

The End of an Era - Avengers: Endgame

Bear with me for a moment or two, but at least for us, this Era begins almost twenty years ago. It's the year 2000 and surprise, surprise, the world did not succumb to the Y2K problem and Earth was still around. That summer we'd spend a lot of time at the movies watching the first X-Men movie. As a comic book aficionado, it was truly the first time I saw my childhood heroes on the big screen. In "real life" or as close as they had ever been. Wolverine, Cyclops, Professor X up on the big screen. Sure, there had been previous movies, Batman, TMNT, Spawn, and many more, but I think this was different.

GLASS is coming home this week. Are you ready for the Beast? #giveaway

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided with a copies of GLASS to giveaway, in return for promoting the home release. All thoughts, opinions, and theories are our own.

In a world where superhero movies have become the norm, we have become used to seeing incredible action sequences on the screen followed by unbelievable feats of strength. We allow ourselves to be whisked away into these fantasy worlds that look like our world, but the only difference is that they have superheroes in it. Glass is not that movie. Glass is the continuation of a story that started 19 years ago and is the perfect opening to a new world of possibilities.

Reminiscing about the First Star Wars Celebration

With Star War Celebration coming up this week in Chicago, I wanted to reminisce about going to the first Star Wars Celebration in Denver April 30 - May 2, 1999 with an old friend of mine, Sean. This was the first time I ever took a trip on my own and I was excited to attend this first event that was everything Star Wars.

We adopted a Pelican! #StormBoy

Disclaimer: The Fandads teamed up with Good Deed Productions and The World Animal Foundation in exchange for a review of Storm Boy. All words, thoughts, and brainstorming sessions on naming our pelican are our own.

It seems like every year we get a movie involving a child helping out some type of animal or a movie about a dog or cat going on an adventure. Now while these movies may be cheesy to some people, these movies are what some of us need to see with our family in between all of the big action blockbusters. Storm Boy is one of those feel-good movies that involves a young boy helping out three pelicans and shows the friendship that they form.

Laffy Taffy sings "We have no banana, today!"

Disclaimer: The Fandads have teamed up with Laffy Taffy for this post. All thoughts, words, and distaste for banana flavor Laffy Taffy are our own.

Banana. Say it with me: Ba-Na-Na. It’s such a strange word. It’s one of those words that makes you feel funny when you say it. It’s kind of like the word moist. There’s just something about that word that makes you feel weird.

Taking on new adventures with Kim Possible! "giveaway"

Disclaimer: The Fandads were provided with an advance copy of Kim Possible in exchange for a review and giveaway.  All thoughts, opinions, and flashbacks to the old cartoon are our own.

Ok, let's start this off by stating the obvious. This movie is made for today's generation of children who have never seen the original cartoon series. This movie will probably entertain them at most and at the same time get some eye-rolls from adults who loved the cartoon. Now, the movie does have it's fun moments and hopefully, it will lead to your children wanting to see the original cartoon themselves.

How do you define aging? #DadsDisruptAging

Disclaimer: The following post is sponsored by Disrupt Aging from AARP. All thoughts, opinions and body pains are my own.

Have you ever thought about why you do the things you do? For me, it's trying to be athletic and show my children how athletic I am, but that has not always been the story. I was never much of an athlete when I was younger. I ran around with my friends playing games like freeze tag, and hide-n-seek, but never anything too strenuous. When I went to high school, I joined a few teams, but not being physically fit, my high school athletic career did not advance at all. After graduation, I started thinking that I passed my prime. I passed my time to be fit and to be athletic, but all that changed when I had my daughter.

Wonder Park shows us that our imagination is a wonderful thing.

Disclaimer: The Fandads attended an early screening of Wonder Park in exchange for a review and product for a giveaway. All words, thoughts, opinions, and love of chimpan-zombies are our own.

As a child, the one thing that we have that makes playing with our toys so much fun is our imagination. With our imagination, we take our toys to far away worlds and have adventures that some time rival the books and movies that we see. In these worlds, our characters have lives of their own and rely on you for their next adventure. What would happen to these characters if you lose your imagination? What would happen to this world if you never went back? Thankfully, Wonder Park is here to give us some answers to those questions.

These are probably a few questions that many people who are not familiar with the Marvel character have, but these questions do get answered and show us why Captain Marvel is a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Being Internet Awesome with Wreck-It Ralph and Google.

In Ralph Breaks the Internet we see Ralph and Venellope traveling inside the internet and meeting all types of characters. From the cool and fast driving Shank to the strange and seedy Double Dan. While this was an animated movie and we knew that Ralph and Venellope would be safe by the end, we all need to know how to traverse the internet and Google's Be Internet Awesome initiative is a great way to help parents teach their children how to be safe online.

Out of all the Disney movies that I have seen with my daughter I am surprised that we have never introduced her to The Little Mermaid. She knows most of the Disney Princesses, but Ariel was the one that she has heard of, but never seen. With the upcoming release 30th anniversary release of this beloved classic, it arrived digitally on February 12th, we will finally go to that magical world under the sea together.

Get Ready for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

Last year there were so many great movies that came out at the theaters and sadly we were not able to see them all. One movie that I wished that we saw in the theaters was The Nutcracker and The Four Realms. This was an amazing movie filled with fantastic images that would require multiple viewings. Now you can re-watch this Disney hit over and over again since it was just released this past Tuesday.

The Shape Comes Home Again

Halloween is one of those horror movies that I watch every time I see it on the television. I remember watching it when I was younger and just being scared everytime Micheal Myers appeared on the screen. While I never got the chance to see the latest Halloween movie, I can now watch it as it comes home today, January 15th.

Are you ready to be scared again with Goosebumps 2?

Walk on the Moon with First Man

Disclaimer: The Fandads received a review copy of First Man in exchange for promoting the home release of the movie and product to host a giveaway. All thoughts, opinions, and claustrophobic moments are our own.

Imagine sitting in an experimental rocket and hearing all of the nuts and bolts creak and jiggle as you are shooting into space. That feeling of claustrophobia hitting you as you realize how tight the quarters are for you and your fellow astronauts. Damien Chazelle's First Man makes you feel like you are in all of these scenes in the amazing story of Neil Armstrong's trip to the moon.

Let's Not Make This a Yearly Thing, please!

A few weeks into 2018 my son had a seizure. We did not know it was a seizure at the moment and we spent the day in the ER having all sort of tests and bloodwork done on him. Although it was an interesting way to start the new year, we decided that we were going to make the best of 2018 and not let his condition prevent us from having a great year.

Well, here we are at the beginning of 2019 and we made another trip to the ER and my son has been admitted. This time we stayed overnight and are looking at another night at the hospital. Before I get ahead of myself, let me start at the beginning.

LEGO Movie 2 Welcome to Apocalypseburg Set is Awesome!

Yesterday was a fun day at the Fandads household because we received the new LEGO catalog with the latest sets coming out in January. While my children and I were excited for all of the new Star Wars sets, Darth Vader's Castle, we also were excited to see all of the set for the new LEGO 2 movie. Little did we know that not all of the sets were on display in the catalog. There was one more that not listed or shown...until now!
