Get Ready for Adventure with Rockford T. Honeypot

When I was younger I would spend my days reading anything that I could get my hands on. I always loved to find books that would take me on adventures to other worlds. Now that I have children, I love that they have fallen in love with books like their father. My daughter is always reading something and my son finds old children books on our shelves and reads them quietly to himself. When my review copy of The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot arrived I knew this would be a book that we would all enjoy together.

When I was younger I would read pretty much everything. Reading was my escape and it helped me get through a lot of my early years. While I mainly stuck to books having to do with themes boys would like: Space, monsters, and adventure, I never read the Baby-Sitters Club books. I knew about them and when I worked at a bookstore I would recommend them to families, but I never took the time to read them.

I Killed Deadpool.

What's up everyone, it's time for my quarterly post on Fandads! Seriously though, I've got to get on here more often.

So does anyone remember the Choose Your Own Adventure series? I loved those books, even though more than a couple of them gave me nightmares. Some of them were seriously messed up, but don't worry this isn't another article about the top 9 craziest CYOA stories or 12 CYOA books that ruined my childhood.

The Cave of Time

No this post is more of a confession. Apologies to Marvel Fans everywhere, and Ryan Reynolds for messing up his sweet gig, but yeah I messed up and got Deadpool killed. Let me explain. Recently Marvel published a short five issue mini-series called You Are Deadpool. 

Wait, I thought I was Groot?

I usually have anything Deadpool related in my pullbox so I ended up getting this series as well. As can be expected there's the usual Deadpool humor and violence but with a fun twist. Just like the old Choose Your Own Adventure books, these comics allow you to choose what happens next. They also include RPG elements such as stats, acquiring weapons and/or items, and dice rolling. It would probably help to have a notebook and some dice handy but I managed to do without. I played pretty fairly, and honestly gave myself some bad outcomes.

Which brings me to my confession...I managed to get Deadpool killed. Dead. Done. Finito.

SPOILER ALERT!!

In issue 4 (which I got to jump to straight from issue 1) I made a series of decisions which led me to getting killed by Bullseye. (in a very familiar way) According to Deadpool it's canon and thus I'm not allowed to read anything with Deadpool anymore. I believe Wade said there were no take backs so yeah. Sorry everyone.

Well, I always try to look at the bright side of things so at the very least I'll have more time and money to spend on the real deal Choose Your Own Adventure books. As I bounced around the web thinking about what I was going to write I came across their website. (Chooseco LLC btw, they used to be Bantam Books right?) I took a look and ended up ordering a set of the classics to read with my kids, and some Unicorn one that my kids will go nuts for. I think they're old enough to have their minds warped enjoy them as I did as a child, so many moons ago.

So there you have it, the TL;DR version is Deadpool's loss is my family's gain!

As a dad, getting time to play video games is kind of difficult sometimes. In my house, we only have one television, so after we catch up on shows and the children go to bed I have the television to myself. Here is where the conundrum begins: Do I try to binge watch a few episodes of that one series I started? Or do I see what game I can play for a few hours before I fall asleep on the couch? What's a dad to do? 

It's Read Across America Day!!

I love to read and fortunately, my daughters have seemed to inherit that from both of their parents. Nothing really compares to the images you conjure while reading a great book and even though many movies do a great job in adapting them, it's difficult to compete with your imagination. Well, I'm probably preaching to the choir since you are here, reading this post right now, right this second....banana.

HA! I made you read and/or say banana. (If you don't get that, then you might not be a parent, or at least not fans of Elephant and Piggie) Anyway, back on track, today is Read Across America Day!

NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. My girls have been celebrating it at school all week long and the school where I work at is having an event celebrating it today. So what can we do to join in on the fun?

You can start out by taking some #shelfies with your favorite books and/or kids. The NEA has more information on their page http://www.nea.org/grants/886.htm, but really I'd say just take the opportunity to do some reading. I won't go into the literature that shows how important it is for children to learn, or try to lecture anyone on the benefits. Instead, why not just have some fun with it. Introduce your kids to your favorite book (or comic book). Revisit an old story or book you haven't read in years. Maybe there's a movie you enjoy based on a book you've never read, there a ton of reasons to crack open a book.

I loved going on journeys to different worlds and just enjoying the pleasure of reading. Sometimes, I would finish a book in a day or two because I had the time to do it, then my children were born.

When I was younger, cartoons were a big part of my life.  They were my escape from reality and also helped me to get through some tough times in my life.  As I got older I started to understand the depth of these cartoons. Are You Ready to Play Football?

Being a fan of football, my family and I always look forward to Sundays.  I mean, who doesn't like watching their favorite team playing on television or if you're lucky enough, being at the stadium watching the game.  I've been watching football since I could remember, but I never really knew the game as well as I thought I did. Even though I played a little football in high school, I couldn't tell you the difference between a "safety" and a ""cornerback".  I know one day my little girl will ask me about the game and I might not know how to answer her, but luckily Jon M. Richter, a dad that might have faced the same situation, created a book called "Let's Play Football" that breaks down the game in a kid friendly manner. Thank you sir!

Haunt You Forever

As you may or may not know, Vic and I used to work at Waldenbooks/Borders together, we've worked in the retail holiday trenches so that makes us thick as thieves or...something. Anyway, we're both out of the "life" (thank God) but I recently was reminded about a book that haunted some of my late nights working at the store.
