Have you ever heard the saying that people are in your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime? Yeah, I thought that was a bunch of hooey, but then I started thinking about the people that have come and gone in my life. When you look at it, some people have a purpose in your life. Then, there are those that say they are your friends, but end up being nothing but a pain in your....well, let me tell you a story about one of these "so-called" friends.
Chicago is usually known for having some epic winters. A few years ago we had "Snowmageddon". I mean cars were literally stranded on Lake Shore Drive because the snow was that intense. I always looked forward to the wintertime in my city. I always liked playing in the snow since I was little and being a parent, I love playing in the snow with my children. I also like to run, and running in the snow is pretty fun too.
I recently signed up to do a run called the Yeti Challenge. The challenge was a 10K, a 5K and a 1600mm all in the same race. Since the race was in the winter I was hoping for the snow to fall and I could take some amazing pictures in the snow. Sadly, there was no snow that day just a bit of rain.
I bought a pack of Fisherman's Friend Original Extra Strong with me to help me on the run. The strong flavor of the menthol and eucalyptus helped clear my nostrils as I ran and made breathing a lot easier for me. I thought to myself this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Boy, was I wrong.
A few days after that, Fisherman's Friend or FF as he wanted to be called, was constantly asking me for favors. Just because he helped me out that one time during my run, he felt that I had to do everything he wanted me to. Don't get me wrong, I like helping out my friends, but I felt like this guy was taking advantage of me.
He would call me at all hours of the day wanting me to run errands with him. He was cool to hang out with, but man was he a pushy passenger. I do not know how many times we would get in arguments in the car. It was either about putting on his seatbelt or what station to listen to on the radio.
There was one day where I thought things were going to be different. One day it started snowing pretty hard and I got excited. This was it! This was the snowstorm that I have been waiting for. I told FF to get ready so he could help me shovel the snow and you know what he did? He stayed inside with my family while I went outside in the cold and shoveled the snow.
Yep, this big strong lozenge that is supposedly the "toughest on the market" and "originally formulated in 1865 for deep-sea fisherman from Fleetwood, England" did not want to be out in the cold shoveling snow. Instead, he was mocking me from the window while I stood out in the cold cleaning up the sidewalk.
When I came in I was ready to yell at FF. This guy stayed inside all nice and cozy, while I was outside freezing. He looked at me with a grin and I thought he said ,"I have something for you." At first I thought he was going to give me a shot of whiskey. It's been said that small amounts of liquors can help relieve the symptoms of a sore throat, muscle pain, congestion and sleeplessness. Instead, he offered me a cherry flavored lozenge and after a few minutes, everything was ok again.
Even though our friendship started out a little rough I think that Fisherman's Friend and I are going to be good friends for a long time. I think he's going to give me a good reason to keep him around during all seasons and be friends with him for a lifetime.
